The transition between interior and exterior spaces defines the feel of a home. It’s also one of the most complicated elements to navigate in our climate, which demands a strict division between the two.
At 519 Kelvin, we folded the exterior materials of the home, white stucco and tile, back into the interior. Where the material extends beyond its typical boundaries the house loses its static qualities and acquires a sense of movement. The building is suddenly lighter and more inviting. The white stucco is drawn inside and showcased alongside pale oak and white walls that gather sunlight. Inside, the rough exterior cladding gains a softness and intimacy. The beauty and sculptural qualities of the heavily textured stucco, an often overlooked quality, is suddenly apparent.
